The Examiner published in the Saturday edition a series of articles
provided by the Society
relating to the settlement of the wider Port
Dalrymple area (1804-1904). The series began on 3
January 2004 and will continued well into 2008 prior to ending,
beyond the
bicentenary of the settlement of Launceston in 2006, as it was so
popular.
The series was joint project of the Launceston
Historical Society, the George Town and District
Historical Society and the West Tamar Historical
Society as a way to celebrate bicentenary
of European settlement in northern Tasmania.
Called “Way Back When”, the series
was being co-ordinated by representatives of the three
societies.
A book is currently in preparation and it is hoped to
have it published by the end of 2010.
While many of the articles focussed on the
settlement of the George Town, Launceston, Norfolk
Plains, Westbury/Deloraine and West Tamar regions, articles on
Northeast and Northwest regions were also welcome
The public is still welcome to
contribute stories about early pioneers or events in
their family or district of Northern Tasmania.
Articles should be between 500 and 600 words in
length.
An archive of all articles was once available from here but as
they are currently being reviewed and or rewritten by their
authors, they are unavailable for the time being.
Should you have a specific need for an article, then please fell
welcome to contact the Secretary of the Society, who'll be happy
to assist.
